ROBERT SCHUMANN writes two symphonies: Symphony nr.1 in Bb, opus 38 (also called "Spring"-symphony), and Symphony nr.4 in D-minor, opus 120. The D-minor symphony was edited extensively by Schumann in 1851, and thus was given a much later opus number and subsequently referred to as nr.4, although it is actually nr.2. Johannes Brahms preferred the original 1841 version of the D-minor symphony, the score to which he had in his possession, and quarrelled Clara Schumann, widow of his intimate friend Schumann, over the performing rights to this original version.
Tenor DOMENICO DONZELLI retires from the stage.
NIKOLAY AFANAS'YEV resigns as concertmaster of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra in order to conduct the serf orchestra of a wealthy landowner at Vïksa, near St Petersburg.
